Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is it possible for me to play InterACTIVE Audio Adventures if I'm deaf, hard of hearing, or simply standing in a noisy area of town?
A: Because we want as many people as possible to enjoy these InterACTIVE Audio Adventures, we include an audio transcript for our experiences. The Deaf-HoH Accessibility features can be turned on or off from the settings menu inside the experience.
Q: Is it possible to download this app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store?
A: Not yet. However, this Progressive Web App (PWA) can be installed directly to your phone. For instructions, tap the "INSTALL PWA" icon at the top of the screen. Once added to your Homescreen, we'll be indistinguishable from any other app you've installed from an app store.
Q: Can I purchase a single experience without becoming a subscriber?
A: Because we don't want the majority of our interactions with you to be transactional, we chose the subscription model for access to our InterACTIVE Audio Adventures. This means we won't try to sell you another experience or push in-app purchases every time you log in. Everything we have to offer is already available to you.
Q: Is it necessary for everyone to subscribe if a group of us wants to play together?
A: Because your in-app interactions aren't routed back to our servers (as part of our privacy initiative), two or more smartphones won't be able to communicate with each other in the same experience. As a result, in order to play as a group, only one member of the group, usually the one with the best smartphone, needs to sign up. InterACTIVE Audio Adventures can be a lot of fun when played in a group.
Q: Isn't it possible to make this all free by running ads or something?
A: Nothing is ever "free" and displaying advertising comes at a price: your personal identification and shockingly specific information about you and your online activities. We're not going to sabotage our relationship by data-mining and selling everything that makes you, well, you. You pay us directly with the assurance that we will stay out of your private life.
Q: Can I experience InterACTIVE Audio Adventures on a Kindle?
A: The Kindle Fire tablet devices are compatible, while the eInk display models are not. Our testing on a Kindle Fire shows that InterACTIVE Audio Adventures are fully compatible with the default Amazon Silk Browser while the Chrome browser failed to play the audio during the experience. Be sure to enable Location-Based Services in your Kindle Fire HD settings under the Wireless & Bluetooth section before starting any experience.
Q: Can I use InterACTIVE Audio Adventures indoors?
A: With a few notable exceptions (noted as GPS Movement Triggers: No in the experience info details), the majority of our InterACTIVE Audio Adventures are World-Scale Augmented Reality Experiences which use a combination of player input and real-time GPS sensor data to trigger events. In essence, you must be outside where GPS satellites can see you in order to fully experience the InterACTIVE Audio Adventures. As part of our privacy initiative, your location data is never transmitted to our servers or shared with us.
Q: Can I turn off the GPS on my phone?
A: Yes and no. Regardless of whether a specific experience uses GPS triggers or not, our app checks for active GPS hardware during each session. Experiences that depend on your location to trigger events will stop working if you turn off your GPS. However, those that do not use GPS triggers as part of the experience (noted as GPS Movement Triggers: No in the experience info details) will not be affected. Let me emphasize once more that, as part of our privacy initiative, your location data is never transmitted to our servers or shared with us.
Q: I have mobility issues. Can I still experience the InterACTIVE Audio Adventures?
A: Our unique and innovative GPS functionality sets our interactive experiences apart from others on the market, providing a more realistic and immersive experience. However, we are aware that this feature might not be appropriate for all of our players. To ensure that everyone can enjoy our experiences, we have made it possible to enable mobility assistance, which provides buttons to simulate walking, running, and standing still. The GPS must still be active on your device while using mobility assistance, but it means you can complete your experience while stationary.
Q: What about social distancing?
A: You can adjust the trigger distance in the settings of each experience to activate a location from a safe distance. Your health and safety are important to us while you enjoy our InterACTIVE Audio Adventures.
Q: How do I pause the audio?
A: Not all experiences allow you to pause the audio, such as timed tours for example. If your current experience allows for pausing the audio, you will see the pause/play button on the screen. Tap the pause button to pause the audio. Tap the play button to resume.
Q: What is spatial audio?
A: The term "spatial audio" is an umbrella term that includes binaural audio which has been generated with a 3D quality in mind, offering a 360-degree sound format that recreates a surround effect through even the smallest set of standard earbuds, making sound appear to come from all around you.
Q: Do I need special headphones to listen to the spatial audio experiences?
A: Not at all! We use binaural audio, a type of spatial audio which replicates a 3D audio environment to create a sense of direction and depth, making sounds seem like they're in 3D space around you. While there is another technique called 3D positional audio that allows you to hear sounds in their original 3D spaces even as you move, it requires special and often expensive headphones. However, for InterACTIVE Audio Adventures, all you need are your regular headphones to fully enjoy the immersive binaural audio experience!
Q: Can I turn off the audio and only read the transcripts?
A: Yes. The audio player has an on/off button in the options menu. When the audio player is turned off, the pause/play button will become a message that reads, "Audio Player is set to OFF".
Q: When I leave an experience in progress and return later, the audio doesn't play automatically.
A: Tap the play button or simply tap anywhere on your smartphone's screen to start the audio.
Q: Why doesn't the audio start playing immediately after I make a selection?
A: Depending on the speed of the local cell network at the time you are playing, it may take a moment or so to load the audio.
Q: I am logged in but, when I click the PLAY button, I am taken back to the main page.
A: We're not sure why yet, but this only happens on the Firefox browser. Switch to another browser and you will be able to continue to your experience.
Q: When I leave the phone in my pocket and let the experience auto-trigger based on location-aware events, it gets stuck in a never-ending loop, or ends the experience with a fail event, even though I know I have moved far enough to trigger a success or the continuation of the story.
A: As part of our privacy initiative, our experiences stop tracking your GPS location while your phone is locked (i.e. the lock screen is visible or the screen is off). Use the "Turn ON Wake Lock" option in the menu to prevent your phone from going to sleep while you are playing InterACTIVE Audio Adventures. REMINDER: The Wake Lock feature only works in Safari for iOS and in Chrome for Android.
Q: Sometimes I get a really long and scary looking Exception Error message when I press the Play Button.
A: This is an intermittent issue (and not consistent enough to nail down a specific cause to prevent it yet) with some browsers, and not necessarily a bug inside the experience. Ignoring this error message will not affect your experience, but you can close and restart the browser or web app if you wish. When you return to your experience you will automatically pick up right where you left off. You may need to tap the Play Button, or anywhere on the screen, to get the audio going.
